BASIC TRAFFIC RULES THAT YOU MUST FOLLOW IN KENYA:
KENYA ROAD NETWORK
The road network in Kenya is classified into six different classes. First we have international roads which are marked A and connecting border points or ports. Currently we have seven such roads namely:
- A1 Tanzania border(Isebania) – Sudan border(Lokichoggio) – 886 kilometers.
- A2 Nairobi – Ethiopia border(moyale) – 833 kilometers.
- A3 Thika town – the Somalia border(Liboi) – 533 kilometers.
- A104 Uganda border (Malaba) – Tanzania border (Namanga) – 648 kilometers.
- A109 Athi River – Mombasa(port) – 473 kilometers.
- A14 Mombasa – Tanzania border (Lunga Lunga) – 106 kilometers.
- A23 Voi – Tanzania border (Taveta) 114 kilometers.
Secondly we have National Trunk (Class B) Roads which link provincial headquarters and other important centers to the capital, to each other or to the international road network, the roads are marked B i.e. B1, B2 up toB10 .
The third class is Primary (Class C) Roads which link district headquarters to each other and higher level roads or centers, these roads are marked C i.e. C54.
The forth class is Secondary (Class D) Roads, they link locally important centers to each other or a more important centre or higher class roads. These roads are marked D i.e. D201.
The fifth class is Minor (Class E) Roads and are defined as any link to minor (or local) centre in the rural areas. They are Marked E i.e. E101.
Finally we have Special Purpose (SP) Roads. Class SP roads comprise various types of special purpose roads under the jurisdiction of various Government departments and parastatals. These roads are marked G (Government roads), L (Settlement roads), R (Rural access roads), S (Sugar roads), T (Tea roads) and W (Wheat roads).
CAR HIRE REQUIREMENTS
The hirer and/or authorized driver must have held a full and valid driving license for a minimum of 2 years up to and including the time of hire and that license must bear no current endorsements during the last two years. A driving license from the country of residence or an International Driver’s Permit is generally acceptable, provided valid as above.
The hirer and/or authorized driver must be over 23 years of age and under 70 years of age. The hirer and/or authorized driver must also be able to provide proper means of identification other than a driver’s license.
Identification documents are required when signing the car hire contract.
CAR LEASING SERVICES TERMS & CONDITIONS
Payments can be made in cash, travelers cheques or in foreign currency.
All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel at the start of the hire. Customers may:- purchase this tank of fuel at a discounted rate and return the vehicle empty, or return the vehicle part full and be charged for missing fuel at the end of the rental at the locally determined price. Please note a surcharge will be applied for this facility.
This is a fully refundable deposit which covers any damage to the hired vehicle during the period of hire. The hirer will be refunded the full excess deposit in cash upon return of the vehicle in the same condition as collected at the commencement of the hire.
Written authorization should be obtained from Goshawk Tours, should the hirer wish to cross a state border. Our rental vehicles will be allowed into Tanzania and Uganda. Goshawk Tours will not accept any responsibility if the hirer is refused entry into another country.
A cross border insurance fees is applicable and the fee depends on the number of travelers accompanying the hirer. For cross border formalities to be arranged Goshawk Tours should be informed at least 48hrs before the day of crossing the border. Any other cross border charges are payable directly at the border.
Chauffeur services will be charged at US$ 15 per day inclusive of meals within Nairobi or Mombasa, between 08:00 hrs to 18:00hrs. Overtime will be charged at US$ 5 for every extra hour.
Chauffeur services will be charged at US$ 28 per day inclusive of meals and accommodation, for all other places in Kenya between 08:00 hrs to 18:00hrs. Overtime will be charged at US$ 4 for every extra hour.
The hirer should ensure that the hired vehicle is locked when unattended. The vehicle must not be parked in a public area for long periods. When CDW (Collision Damage waiver) or TPI (Theft Protection Insurance) is declined by the insurance company, the hirer financial responsibility will be the full value of the damage to the vehicle and loss related expenses regardless of fault.
If CDW is accepted by the insurance company the hirer no responsibility for the damage. For security reasons Goshawk Tours does not allow its cars to be driven to North Eastern region of Garisa and Maralal. In case there is an urgent need for such a journey, Goshawk Tours should be informed beforehand to seek police escort at an extra fees which the hirer will bear
Theft Protection Insurance(TPW)
The Hirer’s liability for theft of the vehicle is automatically covered subject to the terms and conditions of the car hire contract.
Collision Damage Waiver(CDW)
The Hirer’s liability for damage to the vehicle is automatically covered subject to the terms and conditions of the car hire contract. Damage to tyres, windscreen and underneath of the vehicle is not covered.
Excess Liability Waiver(ELW)
Excess waiver is available for certain vehicles. This insurance cover protects the hirer/driver of having to pay any excess fees brought about by damage and /or loss to the vehicle.
Reservations confirmed and pre-paid on-line.
Unless you have cancelled your reservation in accordance with the above terms, if you do not collect the hired vehicle at the time specified on the prepaid rental voucher, no refund will be made. We will, however, hold the rented vehicle available for you for 4 working hours after the time of the reservation.
Reservations confirmed on-line but paid on pick up.
No charge will be made for failing to pick up the rented vehicle if you have not prepaid for your hire.
Reservations confirmed on-line or off-line.
If you do not arrive to collect the hired vehicle at the time specified as per the reservation and you do not inform us that you are cancelling the hired as above, we may charge your credit or debit card in accordance with the agreement made at the time of reservation, subject to a maximum amount equal to the value of the hire.
